Candyss is a keen walker of the Australian outback and desert. The Larapinta Trail in the West Macdonnell ranges is some of the oldest terrain on earth – and makes for an inspiring art adventure. As you walk through the landscape you can see the unfolding of the Dreamtime story – in the exposed hills and rocks you pass through. This is fascinating and very special country. In this painting Candyss paints with a palette knife and thick oil paint – layering and building up texture and overpainting to depict the outback colours and rock formations. Ormiston Gorge is composed of metamorphic and granitic rocks that form the basement as blocks. The have been folded, faulted, and metamorphosed. Geologists say these formed over 1700 to 900 million years ago. Some have been eroded over time. There are so many colours here in the desert – Candyss captures the blocks of rocks, their strength and the colours of the outback here in her ‘Ormiston Gorge’ abstract painting.
