Candyss Crosby’s contemporary coastal paintings aim to evoke the feeling of light on the ocean and the space of the lost and infinite horizon.
‘BRIGHT HORIZON’ describes the soft stormy clouds and colours of the beach just before a storm, the salt filled air and misty rain on the horizon – the fresh and stimulating energy of stormy ocean waves and the reflection of light on the rolling waves moving in to the beach and shoreline. Candyss loves beach walks before or during a good storm – along the ocean’s edge, across wet sandy beaches and windy hilltop lookouts. The light through the clouds and rain on the horizon is something that stirs her soul. She is inspired by the power of the ocean – the ebb & flow, the constant movement and energy, the light on waves, it’s force and vulnerability; softness and strength, its fluidity and tension.
Candyss intentionally chose a multi layering of thin glazes and washes, palette knife thick build up of oil paint while painting the waves and she uses iridescent pigment to refract light in the clouds and sky. The feeling, colours and horizontal flowing lines are what she focuses on. The painting process is loose, intuitive and a response to memory and emotion. While painting Candyss meditates on the experience of being at the beach before a storm, waves rollling in, rain blowing in, wind in the hair, feeling alive and spirit ignited.
