Golden grey spinifex and native grasses dot the red dirt landscape. Peace and quietude fill the atmosphere with only distant thunder breaking the silence. “It’s while driving or walking along I have these flashes of paintings – seeing the storm approaching on the strong horizon line with contrasting sheets of rain clouds falling in the distance. The night sky is darkening. Back in the studio the painting process involves starting with this strong horizon line and sky to create depth and a kind of expanded perspective, then using oil paint and pigments I spontaneously follow my creative inner voice with layers of thick paint, automatic markings, overpainting, scratching out and a strong use of unique earthy colours with iridescent pigments.”
