Asia has been an important foundation of Candyss’ art career after working and living first in Hong Kong and then Singapore for over 8 years. Candyss jogged every morning to the Singapore Botanical Gardens – watching the water lilies opening in the warm early morning air and observing the hanging heliconias with bright pops of orange and red contrasting with the bright green that grew everywhere.
The first Asian Floral series was inspired by these Botanical Gardens and was titled ‘Tropical Shadows’.
“This painting ‘WATERLILIES ON BLACK’ was painted after an afternoon visit to the gardens where the colours were really different and the water was glassy and black. I loved the purple heliconias in the afternoon shadows and returned home to paint them. The colours are really bright and bold in Asia due to the different light and deep shadows. I painted the vibrant heliconia flowers hanging lazily against the shadowy green plants focusing on the contrasting colours, shadows and light”.
