Asia has been an important foundation of Candyss’ art career after working and living first in Hong Kong and then Singapore for over 8 years. Candyss jogged every morning to the Singapore Botanical Gardens – watching the water lilies opening in the warm early morning air and observing the hanging heliconias with bright pops of orange and red contrasting with the bright green that grew everywhere. The house where she lived had bright red palms growing in the tropical garden and this triptych was inspired and painted in the garden.
The first Asian Floral series was inspired by these Botanical Gardens and was titled ‘Tropical Shadows’.
“I loved the bright red trunks against the green contrasting leaves and the diagonal shapes and lines of the palm leaves and trunks. The colours are really bright and bold in Asia due to the huge amount of rain, different light and deep shadows. I painted the vibrant palms growing in our home and intentionally exaggerated the intense colours, shadows and light”.
